In part by habit and in part by an unwillingness to throw away expensive purchases, people tend to hold on to their eyeglasses when they buy a new pair. As a result, there are millions of unused pairs of glasses. Not enough people are aware that their old, secondhand glasses can make a dramatic difference to the life of a poor person in a developing nation.
Lions receive glasses from a variety of sources including individuals, businesses and service organizations - primarily Lions Clubs.
Volunteer doctors and technicians travel to poor regions and conduct temporary eye clinics where patients are given eye exams and proper eyeglasses at no cost.
Lions also ship eyeglasses to Lions Clubs and other organizations around the world who serve the needy.
WCEPD Lions have collection boxes at a variety of locations throughout the community where you can drop off any glasses that you no longer use. Our volunteers regularly collect the donated glasses, box them up & arrange for them to an official Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centre for processing.
There, the glasses are sorted to determine those which are usable or unusable, processed, and then distributed to optical missions around the world. Lions help to minimize landfill waste by supporting precious metal reclamation and scrap processing for damaged glasses that are unusable.
